ADDEV Materials

Interview with Sue CHIANG, Sales Assistant

1. Introduction and Professional background

  • Can you tell us about your role at ADDEV Materials and the path that led you to this position?

I'm a Sales Support Specialist.
My path to this role began with a career as a sales administrator in a manufacturing company, where I gained practical experience in market research and customer prospecting. This experience piqued my interest in sales support, as I loved interacting with customers and understanding their needs. Over the years, I looked for positions where I could work closely with the sales teams, which led me to my current position at ADDEV Materials. Here I can combine my passion for the aerospace industry with my sales support skills, contributing to the success of our sales initiatives and ensuring our customers receive the best possible service.

  • What have been the key moments or main challenges in your professional development?

Building strong relationships with the sales team and customers was essential.
Identifying a flaw in the sales process and proposing a new approach to optimise order processing was a key moment in my progress.

2. Experience as a woman in your sector

  • Given that this sector has historically been dominated by men, how did you experience your integration and career progression?

Finding mentors who could offer advice, support and guidance was crucial. Exchanging with other women in the sector also helps to create a sense of community.

In addition, understanding the dynamics of the corporate culture is essential. This includes recognising informal networks, communication styles and decision-making processes, which may differ from what you are used to.

  • Have you faced any specific challenges as a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

Juggling work and personal life can be difficult. By sharing our experiences and strategies within communities or networks, women can help each other overcome these challenges.

  • How do you think the role of women in your sector has changed in recent years?

Societal attitudes are changing, with greater acceptance of women's leadership and contributions in various fields. This cultural change is essential to fostering an inclusive environment.

3. Leadership and inspiration

  • In your opinion, what are the essential qualities needed to be a woman leader today?

Empathy, resilience and self-confidence.

  • Have you had any mentors or inspirational figures, either at ADDEV or elsewhere, who have influenced your career?

My former manager, who gave me constructive feedback and development opportunities.

4. Work-life balance

  • What challenges have you faced in balancing your career and your personal life?

Reconciling a career and a personal life, particularly as a mother, can present a number of challenges, such as time management and feelings of guilt.

  • What advice would you give to women who want to progress professionally while maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

Having clear objectives helps you focus your efforts and make informed decisions about how to invest your time.

5. Vision and Advice for the Future

  • What message would you like to give to young women who are reluctant to enter your field or aim for leadership positions?

Encourage and support other women in your field: collaboration rather than competition creates a stronger community and paves the way for future generations.
