ADDEV Materials

Interview with Vanessa NORTH, Customer Service Representative

1. Introduction and Professional background

  • Can you tell us about your role at ADDEV Materials and the path that led you to this position?

I am currently Customer Services Manager at ADDEV Materials Aerospace Ltd. My career started in 1994 when I joined PSG Ltd as a Technical Assistant. I worked in production as well as in the technical office. I then progressed to Technical Supervisor, where I managed a production team while continuing to provide technical support from the office. I then moved into Customer Services, where I held a number of different positions before taking up my current role in February.

  • What have been the key moments or main challenges in your professional development?

Being a woman, a mother and a wife, while managing children and a home.

2. Experience as a woman in your sector

  • Given that this sector has historically been dominated by men, how did you experience your integration and career progression?

I had to overcome the stereotype that only men can understand the technical aspects of the industry.

In my early days, it used to make me smile when calls were transferred and customers were surprised to hear a woman on the other end of the line asking, "Sorry, did I want to be transferred to the technical department?" But by the end of the call, I hope they realised I had the knowledge and expertise.

  • Have you faced any specific challenges as a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

I overcame them by demonstrating my in-depth knowledge of the products and the company.

  • How do you think the role of women in your sector has changed in recent years?

3. Leadership and inspiration

  • In your opinion, what are the essential qualities needed to be a woman leader today?

Integrity, honesty and transparency.

  • Have you had any mentors or inspirational figures, either at ADDEV or elsewhere, who have influenced your career?

My greatest mentor throughout my career has been Colin Bolton, my former Technical Manager and now retiring colleague. He provided me with a solid knowledge base that has accompanied me throughout my development.

4. Work-life balance

  • What challenges have you faced in balancing your career and your personal life?

My biggest challenge was when my children were young: juggling nannies, au pairs, school, extra-curricular activities and so on. It definitely gets easier as they get older.

  • What advice would you give to women who want to progress professionally while maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

Take time for yourself. For me, sport is my outlet and helps me keep my mind and body strong.

5. Vision and Advice for the Future

  • What message would you like to give to young women who are reluctant to enter your field or aim for leadership positions?

Be confident in yourself and be the best version of yourself. Don't try to be what you or others think you should be. Be yourself and inspire by example.
